To: Hon. Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, 7 Race Course, New Delhi, India

From: Mr. M. Khaliq Qureshi, 13 17 Shamrock Lane, Plano, TX 75093. USA. Tel: 972-380-5 106

Your Excellency,

Greetings. May God bless you and your family members with long happy lives and prosperity.

You will be surprised to know that both of us (you and 1) passed our Matriculation examinations in First Class from Punjab University in 1948. In your life, you have received many honors but to become the First Sikh Prime Minister of India, the largest democracy, has to be a unique achievement. The office  gives you enormous powers and responsibility. The greatest advantage of power is that one can do more good for others, particularly those who are less fortunate. I hope you will do justice to bring peace between India and Pakistan. Please make history. not war.

Our distant classmate connection gives me a certain freedom to speak to you frankly, bluntly, and honestly, because THE TRUTH may hurt a little but it does less damage than lies. My greatest concern is the plight of Muslims in occupied Kashmir. Every day Indian forces are killing innocent Kashmiris - even yesterday ten young people were massacred - and their crime is that they want to decide their future through a plebiscite, as stated in UN Resolutions. For your information and thoughtful reflection, I enclose a pamphlet by the Kashmiri American Council, titled "The killing Fields of Kashmir, the Real Face of India: Murder, Rape and Arson." India is a big country and it has a potential to be a great country, but it cannot become one until it gives a practical demonstration of its moral values. In fact, India has unleashed s reign of terror in the Kashmir Valley, and that is the characteristic of a terrorist state. Rape is a big crime under the international law. As documented in the pamphlet, Indian forces have raped thousands of women and young girls in order to humiliate the Muslim world. These crimes - rapes, murder and arson - indicate the evil midst or evil ideas of the occupation forces. "Evil ideas inevitably fail because they are fundamentally at odds with nature, but until they fail, they can do enormous damage to humanity." By their brutal actions in Kashmir, India is creating more enemies, more graveyards of innocent victims, more pain and tears, more suffering and humiliation, more frustration and anger. The violence in the Valley is intolerable and the humanitarian situation has reached a crisis level. All these factors are showing the true face of India. Your Excellency, what is happening in Kashmir is a great tragedy; and being a man who is known to be decent, soft-spoken, mild-mannered and "Mr. Clean", you can and you must act to end the evil-mindset of your leaders, because such activities are doing a great harm to India. We both know the difficult and painful early years of our independence - how Mountbatten/Radcliffe conspired to shift Muslim majority districts of Ferozepur and Gurdaspur from Pakistan to India that created the Kashmir problem; how Mountbatten conspired on the backdating of Dogra ruler's signature on documents so that the accession to India would appear legal; how Nehru forcefully integrated the princely states of Hyderabad and Junagarh, and how Goa was seized from Portuguese; and the WORD Nehru gave to Kashmiris to decide their future by plebiscite; etc. Now, it is fruitless to recall the treachery of Hindu and British politicians. The history of Indian/Pakistani relations is littered with missed opportunities. Too many wars, too many peace plans, initiatives, summits and conferences have been launched and then forgotten, amid mutual distrust. However, the present confidence building measures have created a good atmosphere and a window of opportunity that should not be missed to finally solve the Kashmir problem in a fair and just way. I believe that you and Gen. Musharraf must seek the support of Ms. Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Shaukat Aziz and Mr. Advani; and finally end the Kashmir conflict, once for all. The people of south Asia are the smartest people in the world, and as their leaders you have the genius to create the miracle of peace and prosperity for them. If Kashmiris get the real chance, not a promise, to decide their future through a plebiscite, in accordance with the Security Council Resolutions, then, to fulfill your dream, Pakistani leadership will work with 57 Muslim countries for your election to become the Member of the Security Council. May God bless the peacemakers. Amen..
