Letter to President Arafat PDF Print E-mail

June 02, 2000

His Excellency Yassir Arafat,
The President of Palestine,
Al-Quds, Palestine.

Your Excellency,

Assalamo-Alaikum. May Allah bless you, your family, all Palestinians and your dear Palestine. Amen.

Mr. President, it is an honor and a pleasure to write to a leader who has devoted all of his life in the service of his people in order to create a  nation for the Palestinians. The struggle and the manner in which you have led your people from the start is legendary. May Allah give you time to see the fruit of your efforts.

Mr. President, when I was a little boy growing up in Sialkot (birth place of Pakistani philosopher Dr. Allama IQBAL), my revered father used to tell me stories about his life in Jerusalem where he was stationed during the World War. I have a dim recollection of his talks, but I remember that  in connection with Palestine my father used to mention that Jews will never have peace because they are greedy and not thankful enough to God for the tremendous blessings HE has bestowed upon them from time to time. At the time, I did not understand the deeper meaning of my father's statements, but I must have imbibed from him into my consciousness something more that became a part of my focus in later life.

Your Excellency, for a very long time, I had watched in agony the suffering of the Palestinian people, and always it had been my wish to do something about it. So on September 10, 1987, I took the first step and wrote an appeal letter to Sultan of Brunei - a newly independent country called Brunei Darusallam - to take up the cause of Palestinians. However, my main effort in the cause of Palestine and other Muslim issues began soon after the tragedies of Bosnia and Chechnya. At that time, I launched my ONE-MAN MISSION for Muslim Unity with the hope to find a Muslim leader who was willing or can be persuaded to articulate the suffering of Muslims around the world. Rather than going through all the details of my ONE -MAN MISSION for Muslim Unity, I enclose for your information and reading pleasure a selected set of my appeal letters, particularly those related to the Palestinian cause. The letters will give you a glimpse and depth of my sincere commitment to the Muslim causes. I hope you will spare a few of your precious hours to read the letters completely in order to get a good feel of my efforts for Palestinians.

Mr. President, now that the peace talks between Israel and Palestinians have reached a crucial stage, it is important to maintain Unity and firmness on the issues of East Jerusalem and Refugees, as follows :

1. UN Resolution 242. It should form a basis of the final talks resulting in a Free Palestinian  State.
2. Palestinian Unity.  You must bring all Palestinian factions together, particularly Hamas, and develop a consensus. All Palestinians must speak with ONE VOICE. United you stand and divided you fall.

3. East Jerusalem. This issue is not an Arab or a Palestinian issue but a Muslim issue. Recently, I have heard that you are softening your positions on the issues of East Jerusalem and Refugees. Please don't do that. If  you don't stay firm on East Jerusalem  or Al Quds,  Muslims will lose Jerusalem forever.

4. Refugees.  Every Palestinian refugee in Diaspora must be given the right to decide his/her future. This is a human issue and must be handled very carefully. It is important now to end Palestinian sufferings.

May Allah bring peace to the Holy Land and its residents of all Faiths. Thanks and warm regards. Sincerely,

Mr. Mohammed Khaliq Qureshi,
