Letter to Dr. R. Crane to consider mediation PDF Print E-mail
August 19, 1999

Dr. Robert Dickson Crane,
P. 0. Box 1405,
Springfield, VA 22151.

Dear Dr. Crane,

Assalamo-Alaikum. May Allah's blessings be always with you, your family and the United States.

You will recall that we met during the Second International Islamic Unity Conference held in Washington, DC on August 7 - 9, 1998. At the meeting, I had given you a package containing some selected appeal letters concerning my ONE-MAN MISSION for MUSLIM UNITY. You were very gracious to offer positive comments on my efforts on the noble mission. I was planning to write you a letter but the reply was delayed due to my own forgetfulness, for which I am very sorry. When the time came to write, I could not find your address. So, I called the office of the magazine " The Muslim" and obtained your address from Ms. Dilshad Fakroddin, the Managing Editor of the Magazine. I wanted to talk to you on phone, but I did not get your phone number from Ms. Fakroddin- Please give me a call at my home number (972-380-5106), so that we can talk on a sensitive but important subject that has caused pain for many American Muslims.

You may be aware of the controversy that has arisen in American Muslim community regarding comments made at a U. S. State Department forum by Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani. Most of the religious and political Organizations in America have joined together and have issued a statement asking the Shaykh to apologize for his remarks stating that 80 percent of the MuslimAmerican community represents a potential danger to the US due to pressure and influence of " extremists. " I am deeply saddened by the turn of these events because - based on my talks with one of the key leader in that camp - I don't see a quick end in sight until Shaykh Kabbani makes a written apology, I hope you can suggest a way out of this serious Muslim crisis in America.

The reason why I turn to you - if nothing else but may be for solace - is the real fact that I have a great respect and admiration for your approach to the solution of problems between the Republic of America and the Muslim world, particularly the American Muslims. I agree with your view that Islam will complete the American Revolution. I know very few people who have reached an intellectual level as high as you have achieved because of your transformation through the spiritual experience. Therefore, it will be an act of great service to the cause of Islam if you will please consider a role to mediate between the two parties and bring an end to the crisis. Please call me so that we can talk about it, in order to help our Muslim Community leadership to resolve the serious problem. Thanks and warm regards.

Sincerely,

Mr. M. Khaliq Qureshi,
1317 Shamrock Lane,
Plano, Texas 75093.
