Action on KASHMIR – letter to UN Secretary General PDF Print E-mail

June 8, 1998

His Excellency Kofi Annan,
Secretary-General of the United Nations,
United Nations Headquarters,
New York, NY 10017.

Subject : DIRECT ACTION ON KASHMIR WILL END SOUTH ASIA CRISIS

Dear Mr. Secretary-General,

May the blessing of God be always with you and your family. Belatedly, I congratulate you for averting the bombing of Iraq that would have hurt only its people. It was the finest achievement by a  Secretary-General in the history of the UN. I agree "that is what the UN is all about." Since the Cuban Missile crisis, world  hasn't seen a situation as in south Asia where world peace is at risk and your leadership is needed again.

Mr. Secretary-General, the recent nuclear tests in the Indian sub-continent have sent shock waves to the world leaders. South Asia pundits, politicians and diplomats are talking about sanctions, incentives and unproductive ideas to deal with the crisis, but few are interested in a solution of the Kashmir issue that will surely end all hostilities in the sub-continent. Pakistan is a small but proud nation. India is a giant nation and has the potential to be great if its leaders set an example of high moral standard. Indian leaders often complain they don't get any respect from the world community. The main reason is that the world has come to realize the aggressive, evil and deceitful ways of the Indian leadership. A few examples follow :

1. India occupied Hyderabad, Junagardh, Goa and Kashmir using brutal aggression, and it has also created problems for its neighbors. Over 600,000 soldiers and a network of secret-forces (Ikhwan or Brotherhood) have been deployed by India to crush the Kashmiri liberation movement, and has unleashed a reign of terror - murder, rape, arson - making Kashmir the Killing Fields of south Asia, as documented in a  KAC  leaflet.

2. India had promised, in 1948 and 1949 UN Security Council Resolutions, to give a chance to Kashmiris to decide their own future in a plebiscite, but it has gone back on its word.

3. Canada supplied a nuclear reactor to India with the agreement it would be used for peaceful purposes only, but Indira Gandhi broke the promise and used material from the reactor to explode its first atom bomb in 1974. At the time, Canadian prime minister, Mr. Pierre E. Trudeau, stated that " she lied to me."

4. Recently, many American administration officials have stated that "India lied to us about the tests."

5. India was the only non-Soviet Block nation to support the evil invasion of Afghanistan by USSR.

6. India does not want any third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue because it is guilty.

Mr. Secretary-General, a situation like this where India neither accepts a mediation nor will give Kashmiris an opportunity to decide their future through a plebiscite, reminds me the Newton's first law of motion - a body will continue to stay at rest or motion unless it is compelled by some external force to change that state. I believe that you are that external force that can change the current static situation in Kashmir. The leaders of the Muslim political and religious organizations (listed separately) offer their help and appeal to you to make it as one of your noble mission to solve the current crisis in south Asia by using a DIRECT ACTION approach on Kashmir. If the world community is truly serious to solve the crisis in south Asia, then it should help you to focus on providing a chance to the Kashmiris to decide their future through a plebiscite, as pledged by both India and Pakistan in UN Resolutions, with the endorsement of the USA. If the Kashmir issue is not solved now, then I am afraid the world will witness the nuclear holocaust in the sub-continent where millions of innocent people will die and " those who survive will envy the dead."

Sincerely,

Mr. M. Khaliq Qureshi,
1317 Shamrock Lane,  Plano, Texas 75093.
