Inauguration of the Development
Eight Group (D - 8)

 Your Excellencies,

May Allah's blessing be with you, your families, your beloved country and your peoples. First of all, I want to congratulate you for having the vision, courage and determination to formulate the Developing Eight Group aimed at fostering cooperation in Trade, Finance, and Technology. It was indeed a great news for the Muslim world, and particularly for me - the one who has dedicated his life to find a leader who can unite the Muslim countries into ONE VOICE, as stated in my appeal letters sent to you earlier (copy enclosed). It does not matter if the D-8 is a brainchild of Mr. Necmettin Erbakan or Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the credit for this achievement belongs to each one of you and your top leaders who helped to make it a reality. However, President Demirel,  Mr. Erbakan and the Turkish people deserve our special thanks. The Western media has reported that the D-8 countries have little in common and that the Group will never amount to much, but I hope that you will prove them wrong. The Muslim unity can be achieved in stages, and you have already taken the first step to form a small but managable D-8 Group. In reality the Group is not small as it represents about 750 million Muslims. The Muslim world and the West will be watching the progress of the D-8 with great interest. I trust The D-8 forum will be used exclusively for the purpose stated in the Istanbul Declaration, and the matters of political cooperation among the Muslim countries will be left for other forums, as OIC.

A political matter that has the potential to bring very tragic consequences for the Muslim world is the future of the Arab East Jerusalem which Palestinians want as their future state capital. You will recall that it was the desecration of the Al-Aqsa mosque by the Zionists, which led to the formation of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in September 1969. Israelis desire to rebuild their Second Temple at the present site of the Al-Aqsa mosque. Now that they have dug a tunnel near the mosque, it will be easy for them to stage an incident, which they will claim the work of a lunatic, that will damage/destroy the mosque. Only God knows what will happen at that time. Enclosed is a copy of my letter that is being sent to the leaders of a few key Islamic and political Organizations in America so that they will take some action for a peaceful solution of Jerusalem. I hope the OIC will also take some concrete steps at the next meeting to be held in Tehran in December 1997.

Sincerely,
