Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad -
Prime Minister of Malaysia

Once in a generation, there comes a leader who uses his God given qualities, wisdom and guts, to make a difference in the lives of those human-beings who feel powerless, hopeless and helpless. One such leader is Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the Prime-Minister of Malaysia. He is destined to leave a shining mark on the world scene. For Malaysians, Dr. Mahathir is a great national hero, but in the rest of the world, he is known to be a fearless leader who is motivated by his faith, honesty, human decency, fairness, genuine religious tolerance and common-sense approach to the solution of human problems. Now, here is a man who has the capabilities to lead the Muslim world that once possessed honor, dignity, power, beauty and grandeur; but, is now wandering aimlessly into the realm of darkness.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad became interested in politics at an early age, because he noted that the Malays or bumiputras ( sons of the soil ) were not getting a fair chance in Malaysia's economic prosperity. He joined United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in 1946, in order to effectively change the situation in favor of Malays. As a Parliament member, he wanted a strong action to uplift the Malays but his elders were slow and more sympathetic to the concerns of the minority groups. Following his disagreement with the party, he left UMNO in 1969, but he rejoined the party in 1972 when his assessment of the plight of the Malays was proven correct by UMNO. He was appointed to the Cabinet in 1974, Deputy Prime Minister in 1981, and became Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister on July 16, 1981.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad left his medical practice to join politics for at least two main visions - 1) to make a difference in the lives of the common Malays who were left behind and feeling hopeless and helpless, and 2) to transform Malaysia from a developing to a developed country by the year 2020. He has already uplifted the Malays to a respectable economic level. He achieved all that in a harmonious way with the help, cooperation and consent of the ethnic minorities. If one compares Malaysia of the 1980's with that of the 1990's, there is no doubt that he will reach his second goal on target. Dr. Mahathir is perceived as a no-nonsense, go-getter, blunt, honest and fair-minded leader. He believes that " If you're going to have to wait for everyone to agree with you before you start something, you will never get anything done. You can wait, retain the status quo, but that's not what the leadership is all about." He has carefully instituted a number of reforms in the country, including death policy for drug offenders and strict work ethics for a clean government; while maintaining the country's own customs, culture and religion. He seeks to balance Islamic fundamentalist demands with the concerns of other religious groups. He is the author of many books, including" The Malay Dilemma" that expresses his early ideas very well. He has become the champion of the third world countries, and has often spoken strongly on issues like Bosnia, Chechnya, United Nations, etc. Dr. Mahathir's wise and  pragmatic policies have transformed Malaysia into a model Muslim country in the world.
