Appeal letter to North American Muslims to write to Soeharto PDF Print E-mail

July 20, 1995

Dear Friend,

Assalamo-Alaikum. I hope that this will find you and your family in the best of health.

There comes a time in the life of every human being,( probably when the children have been educated and are on their own), when he or she thinks very seriously about the main reason of his creation. He wants to do something definite and worthwhile in the service of his community before meeting his Creator. The  person seeking to do such a thing  must sometime escape into the land of dreams. A day-dream can be refreshing and inspiring provided he translates the dream castle into stone and mortar. Every thinker's journey  for a NOBLE cause starts alone, but if the intention is pure and sincere then he has the blessings of God Almighty with him, and others will join him later, one by one. The question is :"What is the thinker's dream?" Please permit me to explain the situation and the necessary background of this transformation.

For the last three or four years, I have watched in disbelief the tragic events in Bosnia, and the way in which the Western Democracies have behaved. I feel bad that I did nothing, except offering some donations to the Bosnia Relief Fund and taking part in a Demonstration march in Washington DC last year, to ask U.S.A. to lift the arms embargo on Bosnia so that the Muslims could defend themselves. While the Bosnian tragedy was still going on, the new Russian barbarians launched their brutal attack on the tiny Muslim Republic of Chechnya on December 11, 1994. The Russian Generals had declared that they will conquer Chechnya in twenty four hours or so, but it is over seven months now and they have not yet succeeded in their evil aims. The way in which the small force of brave Chechens have fought back the mighty Russian army, without any help from anybody, has made a very deep impression in my heart and mind about their strong faith and belief in Allah. This kind of Muslims may be partially destroyed but can never be defeated or conquered. It appears that the real Islamic spirit is alive and well in this world, as it has been proven again and again, since the time of the battle of Badar. Although Allah will take care of Islam in His Own Ways, it is the duty of every Muslim to do whatever he or she can to help their brothers and sisters in distress, as in Bosnia, Chechnya, Palestine, Kashmir, etc. In particular, the Bosnian and Chechen tragedies have induced me to make a positive commitment to myself that I will do something creative and imaginative to find a long lasting solution for the Muslims now suffering in many parts of the world.

Since January 1995, I have focused my attention on Bosnia/Chechnya, and have raised a voice by writing and sending letters to all the Ambassadors of  the Muslim countries (have the addresses of only thirty two) stationed in Washington, the White House, key US Senators and House Representatives, and the key newspapers in major cities of the US. The response to my letter writing activities indicate that the American leadership, Republicans or Democrats, are not favorably inclined to the cause of Bosnia or Chechnya, and they are not going to help Muslims. For obvious reasons one cannot blame them, but the surprising thing is that the Muslim countries are also providing no real help that can  change the situation, and are content with only the lip service to these tragedies. Consequently, the burden is placed on the average Muslim and the decent human beings of this world to champion the cause of the victims of these human tragedies.

From all this, I have concluded that the only real and long-lasting way to help the victims of these Muslim tragedies is to find a Muslim leader who has the qualities and guts to UNITE MUSLIM COUNTRIES so that they can speak with one-united-voice at the United Nations. This Muslim leader should have the international recognition and a long experience in guiding the destiny of a large nation. Such a leader should be persuaded or could voluntarily come forward and unite the Muslim countries, so that they can act persistently and consistently with a united VOICE at the United Nations to tackle the Muslim related problems in the world. To find and persuade such a leader will be the main focus of my remaining life. Only God Almighty knows how many more moments, hours, days, months or years are left for me to work on this idea. Therefore, I don't want to waste any precious time and have embarked on a ONE-MAN MISSION to find the Muslim leader who has the necessary qualifications to do the job. I am not worried about the success or failure of this NOBLE mission because things will only happen if it is the Will of Allah. The failure would be if I don't try to put this creative idea into action, one way or the other. My approach will be slow but steady. I will be flexible, adaptable and will keep changing my strategy until I have found what really works in order to accomplish the MISSION. At present, I am  approaching and re-establishing my personal contacts and building a data base of addresses of concerned Muslims now living in  United States and Canada, for the purpose of communicating the above mentioned ideas. There will be no organization now and none is envisioned for the future. Everyone involved in this matter will use his or her own financial  resources, and nobody should and will ask for donations. This simple approach is purely voluntary in nature.

In connection with my professional career in the petroleum industry, I have lived, worked, and visited Southeast Asia for at least  twenty years. During the period, I have watched the leaders of  two Muslim countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, very closely. I have been greatly impressed by both President Soeharto of Indonesia and Dr. Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia for the excellent leadership that they have provided for their respective countries. In my opinion both men are equally great but I have selected President Soeharto as my first choice because he has much more experience ( thirty years) as the President of Indonesia. ( Dr. Mahathir has been the Prime Minister of Malaysia for the last seventeen years). For your review, a brief life-history sketch of President Soeharto is included as a part of the letters. Please note that we are not asking President Soeharto to be a religious leader of Islamic world but only try to unite Muslim countries into one VOICE at the UN.

Recently( April/May 1995), I spent one-month in Jakarta, specifically for the purpose of establishing  my contact with the key people who have a direct access to President  Soeharto of Indonesia. I am thankful to God Almighty that my mission to Indonesia was successful in establishing a channel through which all the correspondence can be sent to the President. Only God Almighty knows if President Soeharto has the heart to accept this MISSION IMPOSSIBLE or the challenge to tackle this most difficult assignment of his life. I am absolutely confident that he has the God given ability and the serenity to do it, but it must come from his heart and soul.

In this letter, I have briefly provided you a glimpse of my activities in the last seven months which indicate my sincere commitment to the project. This is entirely and purely my own idea and it evolved essentially by the impact of human tragedies in Bosnia and Chechnya. Nobody has asked me to do it and I am not working for anybody. I believe that every decent human being is concerned about the tragedies and a lot of people are doing whatever they can to help reduce human sufferings. However, we must find a long lasting solution for such tragedies, and that is why I have embarked on the subject MISSION.

There are two main reasons for sharing this information with you. Firstly, I want you to consider writing a letter directly to President Soeharto requesting him to please accept the challenge and unite the Muslim Countries so that they speak with one VOICE at the United Nations. All together, we can make a difference. So let us try for Muslim Unity. Please send your appeal letter to President Soeharto at the following address :

His Excellency, Bapak SOEHARTO,
c/o Mr. Toni Hartono,
Asisten Mensesneg Urusan Hubungan Dengan,
Jln. Veteran No. 18,  JAKARTA 10110,
I N D O N E S I A.

Please either use the appeal letter provided along with the stamped envelop (write your return address on the envelop) or write your own appeal letter, BUT PLEASE DO SEND THE LETTER TODAY, BECAUSE TOMORROW MAY BE TOO LATE. By doing so, you will be playing a part towards the MUSLIM UNITY, and that in itself will give you an immense satisfaction. Your total financial cost may be about sixty cents, the stamp price. Secondly, you can make copies of the appeal letters and pass them on to your friends and the like-minded Muslims who are interested in the Unity of Muslim Community, and are now living in the United States and Canada, so that they can also send their appeal letters to President Soeharto. This experimental approach to induce President Soeharto to accept the challenge is based on the concept of simple common sense, religious tolerance, non-violence and basic human decency. We are not interested to accomplish the objective by the extreme method of the SWORD and BLOOD which I think is self-destructive and wrong, but by the non-violent approach of the PEN and INK. I am sure you will agree.

Please call or write if you have any questions. Thanks a lot, warm regards, and good luck.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. M. Khaliq Qureshi,
