Chechnya – Letter to Ambassador of Pakistan PDF Print E-mail

January 16, 1995

The Ambassador of Pakistan,
2315 Mass. Ave., N. W.
Washington, DC 20008.

Your Excellency,

When a human tragedy occurs in any community, it is the duty and responsibility of every individual in that community to do something to help. At this time, a tragedy of historic proportions is occurring in Chechnya. For the last thirty five days the brave people of Chechnya are trying to defend their homeland against a brutal Russian force. No matter what happens next, Chechen have already won a MORAL VICTORY against the mighty Russian army. The western world is stunned by the act of unity and bravery shown by the tiny Muslim Republic of Chechnya. The Chechen example will remain forever enshrined in the hearts and minds of all freedom loving people of the world. Insha-Allah, Chechnya will be a completely free country sooner or later.

Unfortunately, the western democracies are silent once again because, like Bosnia, this is a Muslim country. These democracies are hiding behind the notion that it is an internal matter of Russia. This is not a civil war among Russians, but a war between Russians and Chechens, two completely different people in every way. One can understand why western democracies are silent, but the tragedy is that the Muslim countries are also mostly silent and have paid only lip sympathy to the cause of Chechen freedom. Except Jordan, no Muslim country has so far recognized the Muslim Republic of Chechnya? Time has come for the Muslim countries to wake up and show some responsibility, some character, some human concern, and some community solidarity by recognizing the independence of Chechnya.

As a simple member of the world Muslim community, may I most respectfully request you to please consider this as your personal responsibility to convince your President / Prime-minister to recognize Chechnya as an independent Muslim country, as soon as possible. Also, please take up the case in the United Nations and find ways to help in stopping the Russian slaughter of innocent civilians in Chechnya. May Allah bless you and give you strength to accomplish this noble objective. Ameen.

Yours truly,

M. Khaliq Qureshi
