Appeal to Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to end Iraqi crisis PDF Print E-mail

September 30, 2002

His Excellency, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad,
The Prime Minister of Malaysia,
Seri Perdana, Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Your Excellency,

Assalamo-Alaikum. May Allah always bless you, your family and our Ummah. Amen. 1 always have had a great respect and love for you, so I was sad to learn on June 26, 2002 of your retirement after 22-years of great service to Malaysia. You had a brilliant political career in which you faced many challenges, both local and international, but you never wavered from the path of truth and honesty and worked hard to transform your country from a racially divided colonial commodities producer into a peaceful, secular, tolerant and modem Muslim country. One of your most notable successes was to maintain harmony between the country's Malay majority and its Chinese and Indian minority. I agree with Dr. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that you are a symbol of everything that Malaysians should strive to be. You are a credit to your country, to the Muslim world and the humanity. The leaders like you are very rare, and they appear only once in a long time. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal, poet-philosopher of Islam, wrote on leaders like you, as follows:

For a thousands years the lily mourns for its misfortune

A person who appreciates it is born with great difficulty

Dear Dr. Mahathir, in a way I am happy you are retiring form Malaysian responsibilities because now you are free to devote some tune to help uplift the Muslim Ummah from its depth of despair and disunity. The Muslim world desperately needs a leader like you to come forward and unite them so that they will speak with ONE VOICE. For Dr. Mahathir, there are still many more mountains to climb, and this idea is expressed nicely in the following verses of Dr. Iqbal:

There are other worlds beyond the stars

Love/passion has to pass through further trials

Earlier, 1 have written to you on the subject of Muslim Unity, and the enclosed letter addressed to a Muslim Quartet (Crown Prince Abdullah, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, President Pervaiz Musharraf and President Mohammad Khatami) is a continuation of my efforts for the same goal. I have a great respect for the Quartet leaders but currently all are faced with difficult problems of extremism in their countries. At this time, you are the only leader who has fewer problems, and is in a position to take the lead, initiate the contact and dialogue first with the Quartet leaders and then the Western leaders of North America and Europe. You have already played a leading role to set up the D-8 Group, and now 1 know you will receive a very favorable and enthusiastic response from the Quartet leaders. The first priority of the Quartet should be to defuse the Iraq crisis and then tackle the other issues of Muslim concern at the OIC meeting in Kuala Lumpur on October 24-25, 2003. Allah is not finished with you yet. You have the time and extra wisdom to set the Muslim world on a decent course, as done in Malaysia, before you pass from the scene. Please take charge and remember, they really live who dare. Sir, you can count on my help for this. May all who work for a world of peace and reason be granted the gifts of extra strength and courage. 1 will wait very patiently for your positive response. Thanks, good luck and warm regards.

Yours truly,

Mohammed Khaliq Qureshi,
