Subject: Shaykh Hisham Kabbani's speech at the US. State Department Open Forum

Dear friends,

Assalamo-Alaikum. May Allah's blessings be always with you and your families. Amen.

It has been a painful experience to read in the newspapers and magazines the details of the speech made by Shaykh Kabbani on January 7,1999 at the U.S. State Department Open Forum entitled "the Evolution of Extremism Recently I watched Mr. Kabbani's famous speech on video cassette obtained from Imam Yusuf of the Dallas Central Mosque. I was very much disappointed in Shaykh's remarks. It is a real sad story that our own people are causing more harm to the cause of Muslim Unity. I strongly believe that everything happens according to Allah's   plans, and although I don't understand at this time the real meaning of this happenings but something good will come out of this crisis.

As the leaders of our community, you have taken the correct stand to ask for a written apology from Shaykh Kabbani concerning his remarks. Also, one can understand the wisdom in ignoring the Shaykh all together. However, eventually we will have to deal with him in one way or the other, particularly in the event that he apologizes. You all know that I have made a life commitment to work for Muslim unity, so you can understand that I have to try to find a way to end this crisis. Therefore, last week I called Ms. Dilshad Fakroddin, the Managing Editor of " The Muslim " Magazine, to obtain the address of Dr. Robert Dickson Crane for the purpose of appealing to him to help in the solution of the crisis. A copy of my appeal letter to Dr. Crane is enclosed for your consideration. Since that time, Ms. Dilshad has phoned me several times to explain Mr. Kabbani's remarks, I told her that after watching the speech on video, I was very much disappointed with the Shaykh. In my opinion, Shaykh Hisham has made a serious mistake and has insulted too many Muslims. Therefore, the Muslim Groups are correct in asking for an apology from the Shaykh, so it will be proper if you can convince and ask the Shaykh to apologize to the Muslim community in writing. She told me that she was trying to reach Dr. Agha Saeed but was not successful. So she asked me for Dr. Saeed's home phone number which I supplied to her. I pray to Allah that HE guides all of us to do the right things rightly and bring peace, harmony and UNITY in our community. Thanks and warm. regards. Sincerely,

Mr. M. Khaliq Qureshi,
